timeSensor LEGAL 365 is a modern legal software that manages documents in the integrated document management system (DMS). When checking documents out and in, the system stores working copies in a temporary directory. This results in path names composed of various components, including:
Client name
Term designation
Document name
Since client names and term designations are often chosen to be long, it can occasionally happen that the full file path exceeds 260 characters.
Traditionally, Windows systems have a limitation: file paths are not allowed to be longer than 260 characters by default. If this limit is exceeded, the operating system can no longer perform file operations. For timeSensor LEGAL 365, this means:
Checking out documents fails
Checking in edited documents is not possible
To ensure smooth operation, Windows must be configured to handle long path names.
Starting with Windows 10 (Version 1607) and Windows Server 2016, Microsoft offers the option to enable long paths system-wide.
Step-by-step instructions:
Open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe
).
Navigate to the following key:
Find the entry LongPathsEnabled search for.
If the entry does not exist: create a new DWORD (32-bit)
value with this name.
Set the value to 1 .
Restart the computer.
Alternatively, the setting can also be made via Group Policy (only in Pro/Enterprise versions):
Open
.
Navigate to:
Policy Enable Win32 long paths open and set to Activated .
After this configuration, Windows supports file paths longer than 260 characters, and timeSensor LEGAL 365 can correctly check documents out and in regardless of the path length.
timeSensor LEGAL 365 uses long path names in document management.
Windows blocks paths longer than 260 characters by default.
Administrators must enable support for long path names.
Without this adjustment, checking documents in and out may fail.
